Social Studies Debate Essay

For many years now many people have been trying to get schools to have a requirement for their students to wear uniforms. Many people believe that uniforms will solve all the problems of kids being teased, mugged, and will stop the problem of students getting wrapped up in drugs. This idea is simply false.
Some people have the idea that if students are required to wear uniforms, kids will no longer be teased about what they are wearing, or the “style” of clothing they wear. Although it is true that kids do get teased about the clothes they wear, it is just a way for the teaser to feel better about themselves. Kids who get teased should jus ignore it and sooner or later they will stop bothering them. What is not true is the fact that a uniform will fix that problem. Put it this way. If students were required to wear uniforms, and it just so happens that a couple of the students come from a middle or low class family, then the students might not be able to have a brand new, bright, white shirt, and nice, crisp pants every day. They might have two or three shirts and two pairs of pants. If a student comes to school in a dirt, stained uniform, the chances are that they will most likely get teased because kids are kids and to make themselves feel better about any flaws they might have, they must tease or make fun of others who don’t or cant have what everyone else has. Therefore, uniforms will not put an end to the teasing.
Another reason why people might say uniforms should be mandatory is because they say that if students come to school in brand new clothing from the latest designers, that after school or even during school ours, they can be mugged or in other terms “jumped”. Although it is true that many students do get mugged for their clothing and accessories, it is probably because that person was showing off their new sneakers or their new shirt or hat or jacket or whatever the item may be. Kids these days have the tendency to get something because it looks good or it looks expensive, or they might buy a shirt or something for a hundred dollars just to go to school the next day and brag that they bought a stupid looking T- shirt for a hundred dollars so that they can feel cool. These are reasons why students get mugged outside of school. They simply just cannot get something new without having to show it off in front off everyone.
One major reason why people may think that uniforms should be mandatory in schools is because they think it will put an end to the problem of students getting involved in drugs. The thing about this idea is that most of the time, students get caught up in drugs out side of school and brings what they learn outside into the school and that is how the problem starts. Many reports have shown that students who go to schools that have uniform requirements get drugs or ideas about selling or taking drugs from outsiders who tend to dress in the uniform of that particular school just to blend in and make their sales. This shows that a uniform policy is not going to solve the problems of students and drugs. They learn about those things outside of school as I said before, and a simple uniform is not going to change that.
In conclusion, a uniform being made mandatory in schools is not going to put an end to teasing, mugging, and it is certainly not going to solve the problem of students getting wrapped up in drugs.
